Togo

Togo was originally a German and from 1914 a French colony and has been independent since 1960. Like a narrow band, the country stretches 630 km lengthwise from the Golf of Guinea to the North and extends with a width of just 50-70 km. The climate is tropical. The approximately 4.7 million peaceful inhabitants speak more than 30 different languages and belong to just as many ethnic groups. The country’s official language is French.

Togo is a poor country. The average income per capita (based on the GNP) is 270 dollars/year and is thus among the lowest in the world. In Switzerland this value is 34,200 dollars.
The country’s economy is not very developed. There are hardly any industrial companies. The only significant mineral resources are the mined phosphate supplies in the South.
Unemployment is a huge problem. Due to lack of work opportunities, many families are impoverished.
